If beekeeping were taught in high school, this would be the textbook. Very beautiful, gentle use of language (would like to thank the translator), amazing illustrations (ink drawings?), and the original was written back in the 1800s! It shows that the modern commercial beekeeping has lost a lot of knowledge from the old days. Thanks to the editor for restoring this valuable resource to us backyard bee keepers.There is some info about straw skeps that is very useful to understand bee keeping concepts, even though you may not get to try out. Like I said, this is a textbook, not a how-to recipe book. The information about horizontal bee keeping is really well written. This knowledge should also translate very well to regular Langstroth hive work as well.Product details

I have been keeping bees for about fifteen years and have had as many as fifty hives at a time, and I own a lot of bee books. I have been migrating from Langstroth hives to first home made top bar, then to a top bar hive from BackYard Hive, then to their cathedral (hexagonal) hive and last year I included both horizontal Langstroth and Layens hives (I did go to the HorizontalHive course with Leo Sharashkin, who edited this book, and whose course I highly recommend.) I clearly experiment too much, but having said that, I like ALL the aforementioned hive types better than I like my Langstroths. This is an excellent book; it probably should not be your only book, because it omits some of the basics of beekeeping, and it talks about some fixed frame hive techniques which I am pretty sure are illegal in most if not all states in the US. Some of the techniques are a little antiquated; but having said all of that, if you are interested in Layen's hives this is the only one I know of other than Lazutins "Keeping bees with a smile" which is also excellent. This one is probably a little more detailed. I would recommend both if you are interested in Layen's hives (and I think you should be.)
I have been following the horizontal hive training by the editor, Leo Sharashkin, for going on my second year at this point. Dr. Sharashkin speaks at conferences, conducts his own natural beekeeping workshops on horizontal hives and writes articles for Acres USA magazine (good magazine). On his website he even offers free plans for making your own horizontal hive and even frames and swarm traps. It's nice if you're into woodworking. If you're not he sells the same equipment. Having said all this, this is not an advertisement for him (I am providing this unsolicited). The real nuggets were written by Georges de Layens in this book. For example, have you ever read anywhere what the BEST flowers are for excellent honey production? I hadn't. That's covered here.
This was my second book on horizontal hives. My first was Keeping Bees With a Smile, by Fedor Lazutin (Russian beekeeper), also edited by Sharashkin. It was also a treasure trove for a newbee like me to keeping bees this way. The pictures alone were worth the price of the book. I'm not sure I'm into every aspect of this way of natural beekeeping but I certainly can't argue with the declared results visiting hives as few times as twice a year. I have not kept bees this way as of this writing, however I have been working on swarm trap and hive parts through the winter and am going to have a jump start this spring on this method. Gotta love those deep frames!
As we get further into the details of what causes hives to die out, why, and what to do about it, there seems to be a natural progression to catching swarms native to your area, then keeping them in a way that supports their survival.
When I first got my package bees I placed them in my hives and learned soon after that my highest priority was to "get them through their first winter." Huh? Yep, and feed them to "get them going" in Spring. This is Southwest Virginia where the winters are "mild". What I didn't know was that most package bees here come from places like Georgia. The Italian bees from Georgia aren't used to overwintering in our climate. Why is this unsustainable selling practice still going on? Free market economics, supply and demand folks. It's because you and I keep paying for it. I digress.
Buy this book, make some traps and hives (if you can) and read some age old wisdom in these chapters. Also see horizontalhive.com. You'll be glad you did.

Great book on the Layens hive and practicalities of keeping bees in it. Some of the information is older and coming back into relevance with modern apicentric beekeeping practices.
Does not go into detail about horizontal hive beekeeping. Was very disappointed with this book as I constructed the hives from horizontal hive.com and was looking for more information about keeping and maintaining bees in this style of hive. Too much info about other hives and not enough info about this specific hive.
